Additional Powers Introduced to Address Ongoing Anti-Social Behaviour

Over recent months we have received significant feedback from residents and local businesses regarding anti-social behaviour around Somerleyton Road and the surrounding area.

Residents have previously told us:

“There was another terrible night of noise disturbance and antisocial behaviour. The music only stopped at 7am”

Last weekend, a dispersal authority was put in place following concerns around anti-social behaviour, disorder, street drinking and excessive noise. During that period, officers observed a reduction in reports and were able to use the additional powers to help address issues affecting local residents.

However, during the night of 14 August into 15 August 2026, we received further reports from local residents and families that extremely loud amplified music was again being played in the street. Residents reported being kept awake throughout the night, with the disturbance continuing until approximately 07:00 this morning.

We recognise the significant impact this has on local people, particularly families with young children, elderly residents and those who simply wish to enjoy their homes without disruption.

As a result, a further 48-hour dispersal order has been authorised covering the Somerleyton area from:

21:00 on Saturday 15 August 2026 until 21:00 on Monday 17 August 2026

What Does This Mean?

The dispersal power allows police officers to direct individuals to leave the area where they are involved in, or likely to become involved in:

Officers will also be able to require the surrender of items contributing to anti-social behaviour, including large speakers and sound equipment being used during unauthorised gatherings.

Why Has This Been Authorised?

The decision has been taken following:

Whilst we recognise that many people enjoy gathering with friends and family during the summer months, the levels of noise being reported are unacceptable and are having a significant impact on those living nearby.

We are asking everyone to show consideration and respect for their neighbours and the wider community.

No family should be kept awake throughout the night by excessive levels of music being played in the street. Residents have the right to enjoy their homes and sleep peacefully without experiencing ongoing disturbance into the early hours of the morning.

Our aim is not to prevent people from enjoying public spaces responsibly. The focus is those whose behaviour is causing significant disruption, nuisance and distress to others.

We will continue working alongside Lambeth Council and local partners to identify longer-term solutions to these issues.
